Introduction

English is widely used in our life in modern world. But how to learn English well is almost the biggest issue that all English learners are concerned about. To learn English well in a short time, most of them are eager to get some “miraculous cure” from their teachers. But when find that there is no such shortcut, they will become desperate and begin to lose their interest in English learning. Eventually, they aren’t really aware that one of the “miraculous cure” is to open their mouths and read aloud.

Our predecessors called “Read books” instead of “Go to school”, they just seize the essence. They would not teach more about the theories but asked the students to imitate, accumulate and practice instead. That is to say, to read, copy, recite and write from memory. In this way, they can grasp the knowledge quite well. So reading aloud was one of the best ways that our teachers taught us to acquire or store up our knowledge. Why don’t we adopt this tactic to learn English? It’s a pity that a lot of English learners still don’t realize it, and only try to find out a short way to “learn to speak English in five minutes”. I think reading aloud is the way one must adopt to grasp English skills. Learning English is not only memorizing words, reciting grammar rules, but also grasping skills. The first step to learn is to imitate. When we learn handwriting, we want to practice copying after a model; when we learn English we want to read after the tape, all successful English learners have experienced this procedure, that is to intimate—to understand—to grasp—to create. This is an unavoidable law to learn English, also a leap in the process from the perceptional to the rational.

During the teaching practice, I have found that the students who read many books can read the text fairly exactly and fluently. Their listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities can be fairly good. On the other hand, those who are not good at pronunciation and intonation can’t read the text. So they only stay at the stage of copying the words and writing the words by memory while revising the text. The situation is far different from those who have good pronunciation and intonation, they can read text and can recite the text very well, they can often use some familiar sentences in their everyday English.

Reading aloud can make up the defect of lacking of spoken practice, lay a good foundation for a fluent and idiomatic English; on the other hand, good spoken English can make reading fluent and can help the students cultivate a good language sense, improve reading silently, listening and writing.
